This week I wrote a lot on deadline. The pieces weren't long—each about 2,000 words. Both were about women, not too far apart in age. One is super famous, the other is almost famous. One I interviewed via Zoom. The other I was with for two days in Santa Monica, in-person.
At a certain point, I had two transcripts staring back at me. I read them and re-read them and then re-humanized them. Recalled inflection and laughter and pauses and sighs. I made decisions about voice.
Sometimes I need to write a lot of prose. Sometimes the person needs to talk a lot. Sometimes there’s a setting that must be recalled and/or culled from notes and memory. God bless you if you don't write down or type what the snacks were, and what the sky looked like, and what whispers you overheard, but I do. Even if I don't use it, I like having an abundance of detail. I want a cornucopia from which to choose. A whole grazing board. I create, whenever I can, buffet of how things were.
