Things I knew without being taught: my Gramma didn’t actually cook or eat much. Gramma, like my sister, was thin and knew the value in it. Gramma got away on cruises and to jazz festivals. Gramma stayed at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency, with its piano bar and great glass elevator. This was in my 1979–80 season. In my grandmother’s 1951 season, the one that shattered her, she was 27 and widowed with two small daughters. Little Lottie married four more times.
