Yo-Yo’s Make Way for the Motherlode was released March 18, 1991. The above is from SPIN magazine, where I had a monthly column ⤴️ before I moved to New York to be R&B Editor of Billboard. I like that I was thinking and writing about vulnerability way back then. 🔆 “Black Pearl,” the title song of Yo-Yo’s next album is one of my Top 10 favorite songs ⬇️ of all time. Sadly, Black Pearl (EastWest Records, 1992) is not available on the DSPs. Happily, the woman born Yolanda Whitaker is well and good in 2024.
